Rudi Garcia makes triple substitution, Vanaken on vs Iran
Facing a quiet first half versus Iran, Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia delayed his response briefly before introducing a three‑player change at halftime, swapping out Raskin, Meunier and Saelemaekers while Vanaken, Castagne and Lukebakio entered. Analysts Marc Degryse and Toby Alderweireld had called for immediate action.
The Red Devils struggled to create chances in the opening half, prompting the analysts to agree that an intervention at the break was essential. Both Degryse and Alderweireld emphasized the need for a swift tactical shift.
At the interval, Garcia deployed Vanaken, Castagne and Lukebakio, removing Raskin, Meunier and Saelemaekers from the pitch. The triple substitution aimed to rejuvenate the midfield and attack.
"Eindelijk het middenveld dat iedereen wil," Marc Degryse said, praising the new midfield configuration. He described the changes as logical and beneficial.
Rudi Garcia added, "Iemand die medisch niet 100 procent is, kan ik niet opstellen," referring to Jeremy Doku's absence because of a respiratory infection. The coach stressed that medical fitness is a prerequisite for selection.
The impact of the new lineup will be visible in the second half, with fans invited to watch the continuation. The match’s progression will reveal whether the adjustments achieve the desired effect.
