Rudi Garcia rebukes Belgian media over criticism of senior stars
After Belgium's dominant 5-0 victory over New Zealand, head coach Rudi Garcia used the post‑match press conference to defend his senior squad and attack parts of the Belgian media that have criticised veterans such as Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and others.
Garcia began by stating, “Ik heb vertrouwen in al mijn spelers, en zeker ook in mijn leiders,” emphasizing his belief in the squad. He added that the recent criticism directed at the experienced internationals was “echt lelijk,” reflecting his displeasure with the media coverage.
The French coach criticised the way veterans like Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku were portrayed as “has beens,” insisting that description was completely false. He argued that every Belgian should be proud to have such players in the national team and warned the writers knew exactly who he was referring to.
Garcia expressed hope that his experienced generation could end the World Cup “met een mooi resultaat,” dreaming they would leave “langs de grote poort.” He said players of that caliber deserve respect for what they have meant for Belgium.
Garcia admitted he had not personally read the critical articles, noting they were sent to him from France. He highlighted Leandro Trossard’s two goals and an assist that earned him Man of the Match, claiming the Arsenal forward had been undervalued in recent months.
Garcia said he had asked Trossard to play more aggressively and be decisive, a role the Arsenal striker has demonstrated weekly at his club. He clarified that the larger victory stemmed from converting chances rather than a change in intensity, and while the tournament has not just begun, he hopes it now moves into a “stroomversnelling.” The coach also noted that the intensity and speed of the team's play had been good in earlier matches against Egypt and Iran, but chances were not taken then.
