Rudi Garcia starts Romelu Lukaku, cites De Ketelaere fitness concerns
Belgian coach Rudi Garcia surprised by starting striker Romelu Lukaku from kickoff in the second World Cup match, explaining the decision was driven by Charles De Ketelaere’s lack of full fitness and the need to give Lukaku a quick boost despite his limited minutes.
Having Lukaku in Belgium’s World Cup squad was already a victory given his white season at Napoli. In the first match he was decisive, pushing the Egyptian defence to an own goal. His season at Napoli had been described as white, indicating little impact.
Garcia had warned before the tournament that Lukaku would not be at 100% after the group stage. That warning set realistic expectations for his involvement.
The evening’s lineup featured Lukaku as starter for the second match, a move that caught many off guard. This surprise sparked immediate discussion among supporters.
Garcia said the reason for starting Lukaku was Charles De Ketelaere not being at 100%. Lukaku will play only 45 or 60 minutes, intended to give him a quick boost.
Matias Fernandez‑Pardo also has a role to play, and his role will come later in the tournament. His involvement adds further depth to the Belgian squad.
