Ruud Gullit trims Dutch coach list to four, eyes daring foreign option

🇳🇱
Former Dutch star Ruud Gullit outlined four candidates for the vacant Netherlands national team coach role, noting that Ronald Koeman will leave after the World Cup defeat to Morocco, and that a bold foreign appointment could be considered. Gullit said on the American broadcast, “Dat Ronald Koeman na dit WK zou vertrekken, zat altijd al in de pijplijn. We moeten verder nu.” He confirmed that the former Netherlands manager will leave following the World Cup elimination by Morocco. Among the names, Gullit noted that Arne Slot is the favourite in the Netherlands, but he believes Slot is still focused on his club duties. This suggests the former Feyenoord coach may not be available for the national role. He also mentioned Erik ten Hag, who is currently director at FC Twente. Gullit added that ten Hag has a clause in his contract, which is known to the federation. Louis van Gaal was another candidate, having recently resigned from his advisory position at Ajax. Gullit highlighted that Van Gaal is ready to step in, adding depth to the pool of experienced Dutch coaches. Pep Guardiola was also discussed. Gullit explained that Guardiola is lyrical about Johan Cruijff and loves Dutch football, which could tempt him to take the job. However, Gullit warned that no coach from another country has ever won a World Cup, making the choice risky.
