Sad Belgian Ngoy receives racist messages after clash with Güler

Nathan Ngoy received massive reactions on Instagram after Belgium's 3-0 victory over Turkey; especially Turkish supporters found their way to his account, where among the thousands of messages racist remarks also appeared. The messages came directly after a brief scuffle between Ngoy and Arda Güler in the closing stages.

Collision between Ngoy and Güler triggers online storm

Ngoy came into contact with Arda Güler in the closing stages, with a 3-0‑scoreline; both players threw their heads at each other and a brief scuffle broke out. Other players had to intervene between the two to restore calm.

Güler enjoys great popularity in Turkey, and Turkish supporters posted massive photos and videos in support of the Real Madrid player on Ngoy's Instagram‑account. However, this support was accompanied by nasty, racist comments directed at Ngoy.

Among the thousands of reactions there are clearly racist remarks, which form a sharp contrast with earlier posts on his account. A post that Ngoy posted after the match against France already had more than two reactions, but the current stream is much larger.

Many of the new reactions came from Turkish accounts; supporters from Turkey showed their support and shared footage of Güler. However, the majority of the messages was negative and contained insults.

The intervention of teammates briefly calmed the situation, but the online storm continued. The incident shows how a sporting moment can turn into digital hatred, even when the involved players are popular.
