Sami Khedira Favoured as Mourinho’s Real Madrid Assistant
Sami Khedira has emerged as the favourite to join Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff at Real Madrid next season. Mourinho is seeking an assistant familiar with the club’s environment. The move follows Real Madrid’s recent activity in the transfer market, including the signing of Marc Cucurella. Alexander Hassenstein provided a photograph of Khedira for BMW.
Other names linked with the role have included Pepe and Ricardo Carvalho. Both former Real Madrid players have been mentioned as possible additions to the coaching team. Khedira’s candidacy, reported by Diario AS, now tops the list.
Khedira, who retired as a player, has built a career as a television analyst in Germany. He provided commentary for Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter‑final against Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu. Sebastian Widmann’s image of Khedira commentating at the Bernabeu appeared alongside the match coverage. His lack of formal coaching experience is noted as a potential hurdle.
The German joined Real Madrid in 2010, the same summer Mourinho took charge, and spent five seasons in the Spanish capital. He made 161 appearances and collected a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Supercup, including the 2011‑12 league triumph that ended Barcelona’s dominance. His long‑standing familiarity with both the club and Mourinho’s methods is cited as a natural fit.
