Sampdoria's gamble on veteran Insigne as free agent looms
Serie B side Sampdoria are set to offer 35‑year‑old Lorenzo Insigne a one‑year contract with a further 12‑month extension option, pending his free‑agent status on 30 June. The former Napoli and Italy international, who scored five goals in 13 appearances for Pescara, is the target.
Insigne brings a wealth of top‑flight experience, having amassed 54 caps for Italy and starring for Napoli during his prime years. His five‑goal return in a brief stint at Pescara demonstrates he can still contribute offensively despite his age.
After three seasons in MLS with Toronto FC, Insigne returned to Italy in January, signing a short‑term deal with Pescara until the close of the 2025‑26 campaign. The contract was set to expire on 30 June, making him available on a free transfer.
Pescara's campaign ended in disappointment as the club dropped to Serie C following the 2025‑26 season. Insigne's contributions were insufficient to keep the side up, despite his five goals.
Reports also suggest a possible move to Greek side Iraklis FC, where former Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri now coaches. Iraklis, fresh from winning Super League 2 in 2025‑26, have secured promotion to the Greek top flight.
For Sampdoria, securing Insigne adds veteran leadership and a proven scorer to their 2026‑27 roster. For the 35‑year‑old, the deal offers a chance to remain in competitive European football, either in Italy's Serie B or Greece's premier division.
