Scotland's Robertson injury clouds World Cup knockout hopes

Scotland are sweating over captain Andy Robertson’s fitness as they await the group‑stage conclusion to see if three points will be enough to reach the World Cup 2026 knockout round, after a 3‑0 loss to Brazil in Miami left their chances in doubt. Scotland’s goal difference fell to minus three, placing them sixth among the third‑place finishers, with the top eight advancing. The –3 differential is the result of the Brazil defeat. Only two groups have completed their fixtures, meaning Scotland must wait longer to learn if they progress. The delay extends the uncertainty for the Tartan Army’s plans in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Robertson played the entire first half before being substituted at halftime. Manager Steve Clarke brought on Kieran Tierney in his place. Later, Robertson was seen in the dugout with an ice pack on his right ankle. He said, "Personally, time will tell. I need to take a day or two to see what has actually happened, and I'll do that." Before the tournament, statistics indicated that a team finishing the group stage with three points and a –3 goal difference had a 42 percent chance of reaching the last‑32. That probability was lower than Scotland would have preferred. Despite the odds, Scotland remain in contention for a knockout berth, which would be their first ever at a World Cup. Their fate now hinges on the results of other groups and the ranking of third‑placed teams.
