Scott Phelan appointed permanent Everton Women head coach
Scott Phelan has been confirmed as the permanent head coach of Everton Women, after serving in an interim role since February when he replaced Brian Sorensen. The 38‑year‑old guided the Toffees to an eighth‑place finish in the Women's Super League, securing three consecutive wins at the start of his tenure.
When Phelan assumed the interim role, Everton Women were four points above the relegation zone. He was appointed after Brian Sorensen was dismissed, and his early impact included three successive WSL victories.
Phelan’s connection with Everton dates back to age eight, when he joined the club as a player. He progressed through the academy but never featured for the senior side, and he returned to the organisation as a coach in 2012.
Former Everton striker Phil Jevons, who had also stepped in on an interim basis in February, will continue to assist Phelan. Jevons’ support is set to bolster the coaching staff moving forward.
“To have the opportunity to lead our women's team as head coach is something I do not take for granted. I am looking forward to what's ahead,” Phelan said. He added that the club aims to push forward and return to the top end of the table. He emphasized that the ambition is to restore Everton Football Club to the position he believes it belongs at the top of the league.
The announcement coincides with new episodes of the Women’s Football Weekly podcast, released each Tuesday on BBC Sounds, offering interviews and extra content from the Women's Super League. Listeners can also follow the dedicated WSL news page for updates.
