Simon Mignolet hopes Belgium beats Iran 3-0
Retired goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, 38, travelled with the Belgian staff to Los Angeles and said he expects a 3‑0 victory for Belgium against Iran on Sunday evening. The match is the second group game for the Belgium national team in the tournament.
Mignolet watched the game from the tribunes rather than the bench, joining the Belgian delegation in the United States. The former Liverpool and Club Brugge goalkeeper enjoys his retirement while supporting his old teammates.
Speaking to the Walloon outlet DHNET before kickoff, Mignolet declared, “I hope for a 3‑0 victory.” He added that he has confidence in the Belgian squad’s ability to achieve that scoreline.
He described the experience as “a strange feeling to be on the other side, among the fans,” noting the unusual perspective of cheering from the stands. Mignolet said he is relishing his rest after a long playing career.
During his career, Mignolet won three Belgian league titles and two Supercups with Club Brugge, received the Golden Shoe in 2020, and was repeatedly named Goalkeeper of the Year. He also lifted the 2019 Champions League with Liverpool and helped Belgium finish third at the 2018 World Cup.
Mignolet reflected on Belgium’s recent 1‑1 draw with Egypt, recalling that “the first half was difficult. But we responded well in the second half.” He highlighted that substitute Romelu Lukaku played a key role in securing the draw.
He stressed that a win against Iran “is a must and should be a certainty,” arguing that Belgium’s quality far exceeds that of their opponents. Mignolet believes a strong performance will aid the team’s progress in the tournament.
