Stamford Bridge poised to host Shakhtar's Champions League home games
Shakhtar Donetsk are reportedly targeting Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge for their Champions League home fixtures this season, a move that would see the Ukrainian side travel roughly 2,000 miles to London for each match.
The club secured a place in the competition, while the Londoners will have no European football on offer this term, removing any scheduling clash.
The Donbass Arena, Shakhtar’s traditional home, has not hosted the team since Russia annexed the Ukrainian city in 2014. The 52,000‑seat stadium previously staged several Euro 2012 matches two years earlier.
Consequently, Shakhtar have been forced to play home games in Kyiv and Lviv, while Germany, Slovenia and Poland have also hosted matches in European competitions.
Stamford Bridge emerges as front‑runner
Stamford Bridge is believed to be the preferred venue because of its larger capacity. A warm relationship dates back to the transfer of Mykhailo Mudryk, and an estimated 32,000 Ukraine‑born residents and another 100,000 of Ukrainian descent live in London, offering a solid fan base.
Implications for Shakhtar and Chelsea
Alternative sites such as Brentford’s G‑Tech Community Stadium and Fulham’s Craven Cottage were considered, but Chelsea have made clear the move is not driven by commercial motives. Shakhtar clinched an automatic berth after Paris Saint‑Germain and Arsenal qualified, lifting Ukraine into the UEFA coefficient lead by 9.75 points over Crvena Zvezda.
