Standard and Charleroi appeal against heavy disciplinary sanctions

The disciplinary case surrounding the Walloon derby between Standard Liège and Sporting Charleroi is set to escalate further. The Pro League’s Disciplinary Committee met on Wednesday to review incidents from the heated clash, with both clubs facing potential severe penalties including matches behind closed doors.

Prosecutor Amandine Herroelen opened proceedings by emphasizing the gravity of the incidents, noting the exceptional severity of the facts. Both clubs risk closed-door matches, though Standard and Charleroi have indicated they will not accept such measures without appeal. A ruling on the appeal is still pending.

The Disciplinary Committee of the Belgian Football Association will open the case on Wednesday, 17 June, two days before the announcement of next season’s fixtures. Both clubs and three Charleroi players—Mohamed Koné, Cheick Keita, and Aurélien Scheidler—face heavy sanctions. The committee will consider the recommendations of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The Walloon derby between Standard and Charleroi was marred by multiple incidents, including post-match pitch invasions. The situation escalated after Charleroi’s 0-2 away win in Liège, leading to supporter unrest and on-field disturbances. Both clubs have already agreed to play next season’s derby without away supporters as a precautionary measure.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has demanded three closed-door matches for Standard and four for Sporting Charleroi. Koné, Keita, and Scheidler each face suspensions of three to four games. The sanctions will be discussed at the next hearing of the Disciplinary Board, with both clubs retaining the right to appeal.

The disciplinary process began following the incidents during the Walloon top-flight clash. The Disciplinary Committee’s decision will not be finalized before the announcement of the 2026-2027 season calendar, which follows two days after the hearing.

Both clubs have issued strong statements regarding the situation, reflecting the widespread dissatisfaction with the aftermath of the derby. The measures imposed could significantly impact the start of the new season if upheld.

The appeal process adds another layer of complexity to the case, with both Standard and Charleroi determined to contest the severity of the proposed sanctions.
