Steve Nickson to Leave Newcastle United for Championship Role

Steve Nickson is set to leave Newcastle United to take a position in the Championship. The departure ends his time as head of recruitment at the club.

Nickson was heavily involved when Newcastle broke their transfer record to sign Miguel Almiron in 2019. He also played a pivotal role in the £40m arrival of Joelinton, later deployed as a combative central midfielder. In 2014, Nickson helped convince Ayoze Perez to join Newcastle ahead of Porto.

Nickson remained a support for Allan Saint-Maximin after the Frenchman joined, helping secure a new long‑term contract for him in 2020. He flew to Brazil to finalise the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon in 2022 and later identified defender Sven Botman. He also travelled to San Sebastian and Milan to assist with deals for Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali, prompting Eddie Howe to say Nickson “made sure that it was a real success”.

Unlike the previous summer’s departure of Paul Mitchell, Newcastle still have sporting director Ross Wilson in place. Wilson and his recruitment team are expected to continue the club’s transfer strategy.
