Storm clouds threaten Netherlands‑Tunisia game in Kansas City
Netherlands face Tunisia at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Thursday at 18:00 local time (01:00 in the Netherlands) amid a forecast of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds. On‑site reporter Etienne Verhoeff, known from the Voetbalpodcast, advises fans that a poncho “is no superfluous luxury”.
At 08:30 local time Verhoeff observed dry, sunny conditions and noted that the sun was shining while humidity was rising. He said he was walking in the sun as the day progressed.
Forecasts predict rain beginning at 13:00 local time, exactly when supporters head to the stadium. The Oranje convoy departs at 11:15 local time, led by the Oranjebus, through the centre of Kansas City.
Netherlands vs Tunisia set for Kansas City later today
Verhoeff explained that Kansas City’s weather can shift rapidly, with 88 tornado warnings issued this year and a tropical climate prone to sudden storms. He added that after the storm the weather is expected to dry. If lightning occurs, fans must leave the stadium without a roof and play can resume only after a 30‑minute period without a strike within a 13‑kilometre radius. FIFA sets no fixed time limit, so delays could extend for several hours.Verhoeff warns: poncho essential as storm looms for Oranje vs Tunisia
In Group F, the Netherlands and Japan each hold four points and a +4 goal difference, while Tunisia awaits the match; Japan and Sweden play later in the covered Dallas Stadium. Local media anticipate about 25,000 attendees, many of them American supporters, and chef sport Christiaan Ruesink plans to watch the game.
