Sweden beaten 5-1 by Netherlands as Benjamin Nygren laments

Sweden were thrashed 5-1 by the Netherlands in their World Cup group match in Houston, leaving Celtic midfielder Benjamin Nygren frustrated after a disallowed goal; the offside flag nullified a potential equaliser that Nygren had floated in for former Parkhead centre‑half Gustaf Lagerbielke. Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey opened the scoring and added a second before half‑time, giving the Dutch a two‑goal lead. Nygren floated in a free‑kick for Lagerbielke, now with Braga, but the effort was ruled out for offside just before the break. Defender Denzel Dumfries was cited by Nygren as a source of his frustration during the match. The decision left Sweden unable to close the gap before the interval. After the interval, Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo scored twice to extend the Netherlands' advantage. Benjamin Nygren was substituted shortly thereafter as Sweden searched for a response. Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga pulled one back for Sweden, narrowing the deficit. West Ham United winger Crysencio Summerville then restored the four‑goal margin for the Dutch. Sweden had previously thrashed Tunisia 5-1, matching the scoreline of the defeat to the Netherlands. Against the Dutch they recorded 20 attempts on goal, nine of which were on target. Head coach Graham Potter said the squad would learn from the experience as they prepare for their final Group F game against Japan. Sweden fell short of the point that would have probably been enough to secure a place in the knock‑out stage.
