Switzerland Draw 1-1 with Qatar at World Cup

Switzerland and Qatar played to a 1-1 draw in their World Cup group match at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Breel Embolo gave Switzerland the lead with a penalty, while Boualem Khoukhi headed Qatar level in extra time. Manuel Akanji’s mis‑clearance allowed Edmilson Junior to break free, but Gregor Kobel saved the ensuing chance, keeping the score at 0-0 before the penalty. Dan Ndoye saw a low drive blocked by Mahmud Abunada and later shot over the bar. Remo Freuler’s header from Embolo’s corner was ruled on‑side, and Hector Saíd Martínez was not flagged by VAR, leaving the penalty unchallenged. Denis Zakaria was denied by Edmilson Junior, who again tested Kobel. Michel Aebischer’s effort after Embolo’s cue was saved by Homam Ahmed, who also made a line‑save later. Rubén Vargas found Abunada, and Ahmed Alaaeldin’s late shot was denied by Kobel. Khoukhi’s 35‑year‑old captain’s header in extra time forced Kobel to concede the equaliser. In the same group, Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina also finished 1-1. Qatar, debuting as hosts four years ago and previously losing to the Netherlands, secured their first World Cup point.
