Tahith Chong to debut for Curaçao at World Cup

Tahith Chong will line up for Curaçao against Germany at the World Cup tonight at 7 p.m. Curaçao will be represented by the Blue Wave squad. Chong, 26, spent half a season on loan at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga from August 2020 to January 2021 after rising through Feyenoord Rotterdam's academy, signing with Manchester United at 16, and being touted as the new Arjen Robben. He earned United's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, joining past winners Ryan Giggs and Marcus Rashford. A 2020 photograph by Oliver Hardt documents his time at Werder Bremen. A torn meniscus limited him to 21 appearances for Sheffield United in England's second division, where he recorded one assist and no goals. He has six caps for Curaçao and has already scored three times, including a goal in a 4‑1 friendly loss to Scotland in May. Chong says representing Curaçao feels like home, recalling his childhood watching the 2006 World Cup final and idolising Zinédine Zidane. Transfermarkt values him at €3.5 million, second only to PSV defender Armando Obispo within the Curaçao squad. Obispo is listed at €4 million, making him the highest‑valued Curaçao international.
