Tapia slams “miserable campaign” of lies a month after World Cup 2026 loss

Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), issued a scathing communiqué on the one‑month anniversary of Argentina’s World Cup 2026 final defeat to Spain, condemning a “miserable campaign” of falsehoods that he says have been spread to tarnish the Albiceleste’s image.

Tapia denounces a campaign of lies

In the statement, Tapia denounced “many lies” that were disseminated to damage the reputation of the national side. He opened the message with the refrain “A month has passed. A month since that final. A month of lies.” The tone was unequivocally harsh.

Tapia reminded readers that the communiqué coincides with a month after Argentina’s loss to Spain in the World Cup 2026 final. The defeat, he noted, remains fresh in the collective memory of fans and officials alike. It is the backdrop for his criticism of the public narrative.

He accused sections of public opinion of branding the players as traitors for allegedly not giving everything they had. According to Tapia, such accusations imply the squad “betrayed the country.” This accusation fuels the alleged campaign he condemns.

Tapia asked, “How do they return home after having done all this? How do they look their children in the eye and speak of honesty, respect and dignity?” He demanded that critics consider the personal impact on the players and their families.

He observed that, after a month, none of the players has offered an apology or admitted error. Tapia wrote that no one has said “We were wrong,” nor shown the “honesty, dignity or simply the guts” to take responsibility.

Tapia acknowledged that mistakes happen, but insisted that lying and perpetuating a false narrative are intolerable. While the squad gave everything on the pitch, he claimed that some individuals off the field “sowed hatred, divided, dirtied and tried to tarnish the image of a team that earned the respect of millions.”

He concluded by urging all critics to assume responsibility, stating that silence, waiting for time to pass, or changing the subject does not absolve them. Tapio’s message ends with a direct appeal: “Assume responsibility; do not hide or pretend nothing happened.”
