Technical error nearly stops João Félix and João Neves vs Denmark
minutes that preceded the opening whistle of the match between Denmark and Portugal, the Portuguese team saw two of its stars, João Félix and João Neves, threatened with not taking the field due to a technical error in UEFA’s official list.
Technical error creates confusion over captain and substitutes
Before the opening whistle, a confusion arose regarding the captain and the number of listed substitutes. UEFA presented Rúben Dias as captain instead of Bruno Fernandes and listed only eight substitutes.
The presented list did not include the names of João Félix or João Neves, which would have prevented their participation. The error was corrected in time and the change was authorized by the Danish Football Association.
Peter Moller, Danish official, explained the situation at the end of the match. “The Portuguese Football Federation registered the squad with all 23 players before midnight, as usual, and then there was a technical error in UEFA’s team list before the start of the match with some of the substitutes,” said the football director of the Danish Football Association.
Portugal drew UEFA’s attention to the error and asked permission to correct it, as is customary in such cases, and the body accepted the correction.
Even with the confusion, João Félix and João Neves were fielded; Félix even scored one of the goals of the match.
Portugal beat Denmark in the 3rd matchday of the Nations League 4‑2, maintaining the win despite the administrative setback.
