Teun Koopmeiners admits he’s never been a guaranteed starter for Oranje

Teun Koopmeiners has expressed no disappointment over his current reserve role with the Netherlands national team. The 28-year-old midfielder made the remarks during an interview with . He also discussed his occasional deployment as a right winger in certain matches.

Koopmeiners, who plays for Juventus, acknowledged that he has never been a fully guaranteed starter for Oranje. "I’ve never been a fully guaranteed starter for Oranje," he said. "That’s naturally what you work for. But I’m down-to-earth, I know my own qualities—and those of others. I’ve always had a positive feeling about it."

He added that his six years with the national team speak volumes. Koopmeiners has featured in some matches as a right winger. "The manager is very clear with everyone, including me," he explained. "I’ve known him for several years and know he sees me as a midfielder, but in March he also indicated he sees me as an option on the right side."

The midfielder highlighted his ability to play inside with his left foot, take restarts, and create space for Denzel Dumfries. "We’re a dynamic attacking duo and defensively stable," he said. Koopmeiners also reflected briefly on the much-discussed 2-2 draw against Argentina at the 2022 World Cup. Wout Weghorst scored the equalizer from a rehearsed free kick following a suggestion by Koopmeiners.

Asked if a new variant has been devised, Koopmeiners laughed and replied, "Everything is thought through, including tricks. But it would be very foolish to reveal that here and now," he said.

Koopmeiners emphasized that while he enjoys contributing in different roles, his primary focus remains on performing when called upon. He described his mindset as pragmatic and team-first, prioritizing the collective over individual recognition.

His Juventus contract runs until 2026, and his national team involvement continues under the current Dutch coaching staff. Koopmeiners’ adaptability has been noted as a strength by observers familiar with his club and international performances.
