Thierry Henry praises Ronaldo’s selfless play in 5‑0 win
Former France star Thierry Henry praised Cristiano Ronaldo’s tactical shift after Portugal’s 5‑0 victory over Uzbekistan at the World Cup 2026 in Houston, noting the striker’s decision to step aside for Nuno Mendes’s free‑kick that led to the goal.
Henry had earlier criticised Ronaldo for what he called a selfish approach in the opening match against DR Congo, saying the striker blocked a potential chance for Bruno Fernandes. He argued that the play risked undermining the team’s collective effort.
After the opening game, Henry said, “The team needs to score, not you need to score,” expressing his frustration with Ronaldo’s individual focus. The comment was made on the sidelines of the tournament’s first match.
In Houston, Ronaldo responded with two goals and an assist as Portugal beat Uzbekistan 5‑0, reviving hopes of finishing top of Group K. His contribution directly influenced the team’s dominant performance.
A key moment came when Ronaldo stepped aside in the first half, allowing Paris Saint‑Germain left‑back Nuno Mendes to take a free‑kick that resulted in a goal. Mendes’s strike validated Henry’s praise for the tactical decision.
Speaking on Fox Sports, Henry explained, “It’s so important, an off‑side position, if you cross to him, it can be a tap‑in,” highlighting the strategic benefit of the move. He added that the off‑side trap forced the opposition to defend deeper.
Henry likened Ronaldo’s positioning to that of Van Nistelrooy at Manchester United, noting the striker’s ability to stay ahead of defenders for easy finishes. He suggested the similarity showed Ronaldo’s adaptability in modern play.
Concluding his analysis, Henry said, “Well done. It’s what I like to see, Ronaldo or my Dad,” applauding the veteran’s team‑spirit display. The former World Cup winner praised the shift as a model of leadership on the pitch.
