Timo Letschert: No one better than Frenkie at World Cup
Central defender Timo Letschert praised Frenkie de Jong on Studio Oranje, saying the Dutch midfielder is indispensable for the Netherlands at the World Cup. Letschert, 33, argued that no other player could fill De Jong’s role in the upcoming tournament.
Letschert explained that De Jong’s style brings calm to the team’s play. He noted that a midfielder who constantly seeks the ball can be difficult for defenders when pressed.
He recalled earlier comments from both Frenkie de Jong and Virgil van Dijk about the same topic. Their shared view underscores the respect De Jong commands among the Dutch defensive line.

During the interview, Letschert said, “I always enjoy watching Frenkie de Jong.” He added that De Jong “always wants the ball, and as a central defender I know how annoying it is when a midfielder wants it with a defender on his back.” He emphasized that De Jong’s presence creates a “rest point” for the squad. Letschert believes the Netherlands would perform markedly differently with or without him at the World Cup. Concluding, Letschert declared, “I would not pick anyone else at that position than Frenkie.” The statement highlights De Jong’s perceived importance for the Dutch campaign.
