Torres picks PSG over Premier League after World Cup triumph

Ferran Torres will join Paris Saint-Germain this summer after the Spain international agreed personal terms with the Ligue 1 club. The move follows strong interest from both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, who had monitored the 26-year-old throughout the transfer window.

Torres, who is in the final year of his Barcelona contract, is now waiting for the clubs to finalize a deal expected to be worth around €50 million (£43m / $58m). The Spain international has attracted Premier League interest before, but PSG moved quickly to secure his signature after identifying him as a player capable of strengthening their central attacking options.

The move comes after PSG lost Goncalo Ramos to AC Milan earlier in the window, creating space for a new forward to compete with the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé in attack. PSG’s recruitment team identified Torres as a player who could add depth and experience to their frontline, particularly after his standout performances for Spain at the World Cup.

According to TeamTalk, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur had shown genuine interest in bringing Torres back to England. A return to the Premier League had been a consideration for the player, but his decision changed once PSG entered the picture. “We can confirm that both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur showed an interest in bringing the Spain international back to England, with a return to the Premier League having been a genuine consideration for the player,” a source told TeamTalk.

Torres’ preference for PSG was sealed after discussions with head coach Luis Enrique. “However, once PSG made their approach, Torres spoke with head coach Luis Enrique and that conversation proved decisive,” the report states. The player’s trust in Enrique’s project and the opportunity to compete for major honours in France ultimately swayed his decision.

TeamTalk adds that “Torres subsequently made it clear that he wanted to join PSG”, with the chance to work under Enrique and pursue titles in Ligue 1 proving decisive. From PSG’s perspective, the clarity of the player’s intent is significant, as it often simplifies negotiations between clubs once a commitment is made.

Torres leaves Barcelona with a strong record, having scored 65 goals and provided 23 assists in 207 appearances for the Catalan club. He also contributed to seven major trophies, including three LaLiga titles, reflecting his consistency and adaptability across multiple systems. His profile has risen further after an outstanding summer with Spain, where he scored the winning goal in the World Cup final against Argentina as La Roja lifted the trophy.

For Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, the deal now appears out of reach. “Arsenal and Tottenham will now have to look elsewhere after failing to convince Torres, who has chosen Paris despite the Premier League interest,” the report notes. The clubs had explored the option seriously, but the player’s preference for PSG and Enrique’s project made the difference.

Barcelona and PSG are expected to finalize the remaining details of the transfer in the coming days. The deal, once completed, will mark a significant step for Torres as he seeks new challenges in Ligue 1 after years of success in Spain.
