Tottenham shatter record with €99m signing of Matheus Fernandes

🇬🇧
Tottenham Hotspur confirmed on Thursday morning that Portuguese midfielder Matheus Fernandes has joined the club from West Ham United for a reported €99 million, setting a new transfer record for the London side. The deal was announced at 11:10 and makes Fernandes the most expensive signing in Tottenham’s history. Earlier this week, Fabrizio Romano and other transfer journalists revealed that Tottenham had reached an agreement with the relegated West Ham United over Fernandes (21). The agreement is now finalised. Fernandes played one season for West Ham United. West Ham had signed him in August 2025 for a little over forty million euros from Southampton, and the midfielder also experienced relegation from the Premier League with that side. Tottenham have already added Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi on a free transfer, and Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke, the latter costing €60 million. Manager Roberto De Zerbi’s side is also actively pursuing the arrival of Sandro Tonali. It is likely Spurs will break the transfer record again later this week, as a Newcastle midfielder is reportedly priced at least €115 million. Romano reported Thursday that the Italian is on his way to North London for a medical. Tottenham’s previous record was held by Xavi Simons, who arrived for €65 million in August 2025 from RB Leipzig.
