Tottenham table £60m bid for Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo
Tottenham Hotspur have opened a £60m file on Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo. The bid is understood to be around €70m for the 27-year-old Dutch international.
Liverpool have drawn up plans to reshape their wing options this summer. Mohamed Salah is leaving after agreeing to terminate his £400k-per-week contract one year early. Federico Chiesa is also for sale at around €20m, with multiple Italian clubs monitoring the 28-year-old.
Potential replacements include Yan Diomande, Bradley Barcola, and Francisco Trincao. RB Leipzig could sell Diomande, 19, for around €100m. Paris Saint-Germain may offload Barcola, though his price could exceed Diomande’s. Sporting CP are willing to sell Trincao for €50m.
Gakpo’s exit would benefit 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha, who has been blocked by the Dutchman on the left wing. Ngumoha is contracted for two more seasons, with Bayern Munich reportedly interested. Liverpool must secure his future to avoid losing him for free.
A £70m fee for Gakpo would provide sporting director Richard Hughes with funds to replace or upgrade the forward. Liverpool’s financial strategy typically balances sales with new signings. Last summer’s £450m spending spree makes a repeat unlikely this time.
Gakpo joined Liverpool in 2023 and signed a long-term contract last year. Tottenham are leading the race for his signature, with Newcastle and Bayern Munich also monitoring. A formal approach from Spurs is expected soon.
The bid could trigger a bidding war for the Netherlands international. Liverpool may prioritize a sale over keeping an underperforming Gakpo on high wages for the remainder of his contract.
