Trump's call to FIFA sparks fresh controversy over Balogun's red card
In a press conference this afternoon, former U.S. President Donald Trump defended striker Folarin Balogun after FIFA lifted the red card that had barred the American from the upcoming match against Belgium’s national side, the Red Devils. He argued the dismissal was unjust and cited the incident against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Trump singled out referee Raphael Claus, describing him as "a bit suspicious when you look at his past" and saying the decision "nobody could believe". He added, "He is our best player, or one of our best players. And he gave him a red card."
The former president also confirmed that he had spoken directly with FIFA president Gianni Infantino to request a review of the sanction. "Yes, I asked FIFA for a review," Trump said.

The original dismissal occurred during the game against Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Trump maintained that Balogun’s action "was not a foul". The episode has kept the controversy alive, with reports describing the decision as a bomb.
