Uitstel adds pressure ahead of Antwerp Thursday takeover

🇧🇪 By 4All Football Editorial ·

In the boardroom of Royal Antwerp FC, a palpable tension lingered as the clock ticked towards Thursday, the day the club hopes to announce a principle agreement on its ownership. The delay, or Uitstel, has amplified the stakes for owner Paul Gheysens, who recently secured an extension from the leverage fund Fasanara until 14 July to repay a loan of roughly €6.5 million.

Negotiations between Paul Gheysens and the investment group centred around Wouter Vandenhaute are now described as moving in the right direction, according to sources close to the talks. Both Royal Antwerp FC and Vandenhaute are eager to communicate the agreement on Thursday, pending clarification of a final detail.

Yanko Beeckman reported the developments, with the story dated 15 July 2026, 19:22 and a last update at 19:54. The report appeared on HLN15 and highlighted the urgency surrounding the pending deal.

Owner Paul Gheysens had previously been granted an extension by the fund Fasanara, allowing him until 14 July to settle the €6.5 million debt. This financial pressure has forced him to consider two possible routes to fund the repayment.

The first scenario involves Gheysens selling a portion of his shares to an interested foreign party while retaining his position as majority shareholder. The alternative would see him relinquish his entire stake to the consortium built around Wouter Vandenhaute.

By Tuesday, no definitive deal had been reached, and expectations shifted to Wednesday for a possible agreement. However, a remaining detail needed to be cleared on Wednesday evening, delaying the finalisation.

According to the information gathered, the Vandenhaute group, which includes club legend Toby Alderweireld, possesses the strongest paperwork to bring the takeover to a successful close. Their involvement is seen as a key factor in overcoming the last hurdle.

The outcome of Thursday’s announcement will determine the future ownership structure of Royal Antwerp FC and could set a precedent for similar club takeovers in Belgium. The suspense surrounding the Uitstel underscores how financial timelines can shape the destiny of a historic club.
