Van Bergen pushes for AZ move as Groningen stalls the deal

🇳🇱

In the early morning studio of RTV Noord, 22‑year‑old forward Thom van Bergen reiterated his desire to leave FC Groningen for AZ, a transfer that has been on the table since June despite his contract running until mid‑2028. He told the camera that the talks were difficult and that the club's decision would determine his future.

AZ's interest in Van Bergen was confirmed in June, when the Dutch club identified the 22‑year‑old as a target. Van Bergen is under contract with FC Groningen until the middle of 2028, giving the northern side considerable bargaining power.

FC Groningen has publicly expressed reluctance to lose the forward, stating they prefer he stays in Alkmaar. Speaking to RTV Noord, Van Bergen said, "Er zijn geen verdere ontwikkelingen," adding that "Het is gewoon wachten."

Van Bergen explained his motivation, saying, "Ik wil graag, zeker. Ik denk dat het sportief een mooie stap is. Dat wil ik aangaan." He added that negotiations have been difficult and there is a risk the deal may fall through, but he hopes the clubs can finalise the transfer.

He recognised that Groningen ultimately controls his future, noting, "In principe bepaalt de club. Wat ik al aangaf: ik hoop dat ze het rond kunnen maken. Daar is het nu wachten op." The forward stressed that the outcome now depends on the club's decision.

If the move materialises, AZ would add a young striker with a contract secured until 2028, potentially boosting their attacking options. Conversely, Groningen could lose a home‑grown talent, which may impact their squad planning for the coming seasons.

The situation highlights the broader challenge Dutch clubs face in balancing player ambitions with contractual constraints. Van Bergen's case will be watched closely as a barometer for future transfer negotiations involving long‑term contracts.
