Van Bommel in Kansas City as Duivels plot wake-up call
Belgium’s final group-stage clash against New Zealand in Canada served as a wake-up call for the Red Devils after draws with Egypt and Iran. “We have enough quality to win,” said defender Brandon Mechele, “but our intensity must rise.”
Germany’s rotation policy backfired as they lost to Ecuador while already assured of top spot. “It’s not ideal to be punished for winning the group,” admitted coach Julian Nagelsmann ahead of their 29 June 20:30 kick-off.
Mark van Bommel, two-time Dutch World Cup veteran, flew to Kansas City to support his Oranje teammates against Tunisia. “I was on holiday in Ibiza but decided to come,” he said. Since leaving Royal Antwerp, the Dutch coach has yet to secure a new club despite interest.
Rudi Garcia’s Belgium will be without Jérémy Doku “normally” against New Zealand, while Garcia stressed the group remains calm after two uninspiring draws. “Egypt and Iran were a wake-up call,” he told reporters.
Curaçao’s World Cup adventure ended with one draw and two defeats. Coach Dick Advocaat said, “They worked extremely hard. They can be proud.” He declined to say whether this was his final match in charge.
The so-called “salon remises” saw Japan draw 1-1 with Sweden and Paraguay hold Australia 0-0, yet both sides advanced as best third-placed teams with four points each.
Belgium’s potential Round of 16 opponents and qualification scenarios were also detailed in Garcia’s press conference.
Japan-Sweden and Paraguay-Australia results were described as low-risk but decisive, securing passage despite minimal attacking output.
