Van Bronckhorst backs Valente's captaincy ahead of Sparta clash
Giovanni van Bronckhorst issued a written statement today explaining his decision to appoint Luciano Valente as the new captain of Feyenoord Rotterdam, insisting the role will aid the midfielder’s development rather than hinder his game as the club prepares for the upcoming clash with Sparta Rotterdam.
On Saturday it became clear that Valente will wear the captain’s armband this season. The head coach of the Rotterdammers confirmed the appointment just before kickoff against Sparta.
"In the conversations I have had with him and the rest of the group, I find Luciano the right person to wear the armband today and this season," said Van Bronckhorst. He added that the responsibility will support the midfielder’s next career move.
Givairo Read and Anis Hadj Moussa were also considered for the role, but both may leave in the summer. Van Bronckhorst stressed that their possible departures did not influence his choice of Valente.
Ahead of the Sparta encounter, Van Bronckhorst addressed transfer rumors surrounding Ayase Ueda, noting that Feyenoord received a "serious" offer from Fenerbahçe. He said he is not "afraid" and will manage any changes should they arise.
For the match, Van Bronckhorst selected a midfield trio of Charles Vanhoutte, Gjivai Zechiël and Valente, highlighting the depth offered by Oussama Targhalline, Sem Steijn and Tobias van den Elshout. The selection reflects his desire to balance experience with emerging talent.
He concluded that the aim is to build a stable eleven, recognising the considerable potential within the squad as they move forward. Van Bronckhorst believes this approach will sustain performance throughout the season.
