Verena Hanshaw's move signals fresh ambition for Austria Wien

🇦🇹

Verena Hanshaw, the 32‑year‑old Austrian defender with more than 130 international caps, has signed for FK Austria Wien from Women’s Super League side West Ham. The transfer, confirmed in early April, is hailed as a major coup for the ÖFB Frauen Bundesliga.

Hanshaw’s résumé includes spells with Italian giants Roma, German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt and a recent stint at West Ham. She is Austria’s fifth‑most‑capped player and joint‑eighth highest scorer despite playing as a defender.

“I’m very happy to be returning to my homeland after 16 years,” Hanshaw said. She added that she looks forward to meeting the squad, playing in front of fans and experiencing the atmosphere at the Franz Horr stadium.

Austria Wien manager Stefan Kenesei described the signing as “a strong signal for our sporting direction”. He praised Hanshaw’s “enormous international experience” and expected her to lead on the pitch immediately.

Austria Wien will begin their Bundesliga title defence on 31 July against rivals SKN St. Pölten at the Franz Horr arena. Their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign starts on 5 August at home versus Croatian side Hajduk Split.

A photo by Christian Hofer captured Hanshaw controlling the ball during the UEFA Women’s European Qualifier against Germany on 5 April in Linz. The image underscores her continued involvement at the highest level of international football.
