Verhoeff warns: poncho essential as storm looms for Oranje vs Tunisia

The Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City faces a high risk of severe weather delaying the Netherlands’ final group game against Tunisia at the FIFA World Cup. Meteorologists predict thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds, with kick-off potentially pushed back or the match interrupted. Etienne Verhoeff, reporting live from Kansas City, noted at 08:30 local time that conditions were calm under sunny skies, but humidity was rising. Forecasts indicate scattered thunderstorms within five hours of kick-off, accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong gusts. An hour before the 18:00 local time (01:00 CET) start, severe storms are expected. Verhoeff described the weather pattern as typical for Kansas City. “The sun can shine and half an hour later a storm can break out. It happens here a lot. This year alone there have been 88 tornado warnings,” he said. World Cup matches in the United States are subject to strict FIFA safety protocols regarding lightning. Delays can be extensive: the second half of France vs Iraq on Monday began two hours late due to storms in Philadelphia. If lightning strikes during the Oranje-Tunisia game, fans must evacuate the open-air stadium. Play may only resume after 30 minutes with no new lightning detected within 13 km of the venue. Each new lightning strike resets the 30-minute timer, potentially prolonging delays for hours if storms persist. FIFA does not impose a fixed time limit for abandonment; each situation is assessed individually. The Netherlands and Tunisia are locked in a battle for Group F supremacy. Japan and Sweden, meeting in Dallas Stadium under a roof, both have four points and a goal difference of +4. Brazil and Morocco, who played on Wednesday, may benefit if the Dutch match is delayed, gaining extra rest ahead of a possible Round of 16 tie. Despite the weather threat, the traditional Dutch team parade is set to proceed as planned. The Oranjestoet, led by the Oranjebus, departs downtown Kansas City at 11:15 local time. Local media expect 25,000 spectators, including many American supporters. Thousands of Oranje fans celebrated in the city on Wednesday evening at the National WW1 Memorial during the FIFA Fan Festival. Chef sport Christiaan Ruesink will attend the match this evening. The Netherlands and Tunisia meet in the final group-stage fixture, with both teams level on four points and a goal difference of +4.
