Vincenzo Montella refuses to quit Turkey after WC flop

Italian coach Vincenzo Montella has ruled out stepping down as head of the Turkish national team, despite the side’s disastrous performance at the World Cup, where Turkey lost 2‑0 to Australia and 1‑0 to Paraguay, sealing their early exit before the final group match against the United States.

Before the tournament, Turkey was listed among the outsiders expected to struggle. Analysts had not projected them to advance beyond the group stage.

The opening match ended in a 2‑0 defeat to Australia, followed by a 1‑0 loss to Paraguay. These results left the final group game versus the United States without significance.

The pressure on Montella in Turkey has grown after the flop, but he says he is not considering resignation. He acknowledged the mounting pressure but insisted he is not contemplating stepping down.

During the pre‑match press conference ahead of the United States fixture, Montella was asked about his future. He replied, “The answer is no to the question of whether I want to resign. The energy and passion are still present with me,” making clear his intention to stay.

The Turkish Football Federation faces mounting criticism as the team’s World Cup campaign ends prematurely. Montella’s refusal to leave adds another layer to the domestic debate.

Montella, who hails from Italy, stressed that any demand for his resignation would have to be accepted as impossible. His statement underscores his determination to continue leading Turkey despite the setbacks.
