Vinicius Junior avoids contract talk ahead of World Cup

Vinicius Junior sidestepped questions on his Real Madrid future ahead of Brazil’s opening World Cup match against Morocco. The Brazil winger has a year remaining on his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid and the player have not reached a renewal despite earlier talks. President Florentino Perez said the stalemate is not due to financial demands, and Vinicius Junior has expressed a desire to stay. If no agreement is reached, the contract could expire on a free transfer in just over a year. Renewal discussions were first opened two summers ago but were mutually paused. Speaking before the World Cup opener, Vinicius Junior told Diario AS he was focused solely on the national team and would discuss club matters after the tournament. He praised former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, saying playing under Ancelotti gives him peace of mind and confidence. Vinicius added that he is at his peak physically, has avoided injuries this season, and aims to help Brazil regardless of personal statistics. Real Madrid appointed Jose Mourinho as the new head coach this week, making Vinicius Junior his fourth manager in twelve months. Mourinho previously accused the Brazilian of provoking racist abuse from Benfica fans in February. Images for the story were supplied by photographer Pedro Vilela and Denis Doyle.
