Vozinha's heroics boost Cape Verde, Tunisia sack coach
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, a 40‑year‑old Chaves veteran, saw his social media followers rise from 50,000 to 2.5 million after the group stage draw with Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. At the same tournament, Tunisia dismissed head coach Sabry Lamouchi following a 5‑1 defeat to Sweden.
Spain, coached by Luis de la Fuente, were held to a 0‑0 draw by Cape Verde at Atlanta’s Mercedes‑Benz Stadium despite registering 27 shots, seven on target. Vozinha’s series of saves nullified Spain’s 2.1 expected goals, earning the Cape Verdean side a point in their World Cup debut.
Premier League stars Vitkor Gyokers and Alexander Isak each scored as Graham Potter’s side overwhelmed Tunisia in Guadalupe during the Group F match. The loss prompted the Tunisian federation to name Mondher Kebaier as the likely replacement for Lamouchi.
France will open Group I against Senegal, a first meeting since the 2002 World Cup, with Pape Thiaw’s men expected to test the French defence. Didier Deschamps, in his final tournament, aims to guide France to a third consecutive World Cup final.
Lionel Messi will mark his 200th cap for Argentina in the Group J opener against Algeria, becoming the first player to appear in six World Cups. Argentina will begin their title defence from Kansas City, where Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham, are based.
