Wesley Sneijder names Cody Gakpo as Oranje's decisive player
Wesley Sneijder told 3FM’s Barend en Benner programme that Cody Gakpo should become the leading figure for the Netherlands national team after the Liverpool striker netted two goals in the 5‑1 World Cup win over Sweden. He believes Gakpo can be decisive in upcoming matches.
Wesley Sneijder responded to a question from radio presenter Barend van Deelen on the 3FM programme Barend en Benner. The discussion centred on which player should step up for the Netherlands national team, known as Oranje.
Sneijder noted that at the close of major tournaments there is always a player who carries Oranje forward. He argued that this role should belong to Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo this year.
“I would not be able to name it directly, but maybe Gakpo. I think he has also been decisive for Oranje in recent years during big matches. If we have to name one, I name Gakpo,” Sneijder said.
Gakpo scored his first two World Cup goals in the Netherlands' 5‑1 victory over Sweden. The strike helped secure the win and highlighted his impact at the tournament.
The former PSV Eindhoven attacker has impressed both at the World Cup and in the Premier League with Liverpool. His performances have drawn attention beyond the Dutch squad.
Roberto De Zerbi, manager of Tottenham Hotspur, reportedly has Gakpo high on his transfer wish list. The Italian coach sees the Liverpool striker as a potential addition to his side.
According to several media outlets, a contract of at least five years is prepared for Gakpo in North London. The deal would link the player with Tottenham Hotspur pending a move.
