Wim Kieft admits bias toward Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman
Wim Kieft, former Dutch international striker turned analyst, said today at 19:51 on Studio Oranje that he harbours a soft spot for Netherlands national team coach Ronald Koeman. The admission comes as Kieft discusses his difficulty remaining fully critical of the coach he once admired.
Kieft explained that as an analyst he is expected to give independent advice, even about players he shared the pitch with. He recalled that judging former teammates was challenging because of the long relationships built during his playing career.
He described Koeman as a ‘result‑footballer’, noting that the coach had worked alongside Johan Cruijff at Barcelona and later focused on results at PSV. Kieft highlighted Koeman’s reputation for prioritising winning outcomes above stylistic play.
‘I try to stay objective, but I have a bit of a soft spot for the national coach,’ Kieft said during the broadcast. The quote underscores his personal affinity influencing his analytical stance.
Kieft admitted that in his early years as an analyst he found it especially hard to critique former colleagues who were still active, such as Ruud Gullit who was still playing when Kieft retired early. The early retirement meant many of his former teammates were still in the game, complicating his judgments.
He added that the situation grew more complex when those former teammates transitioned to coaching roles, observing that they often performed less well as managers than as players. Kieft said this shift made delivering critical commentary even less pleasant.
The Studio Oranje episode also covered the surprising performance of Cape Verde, the crisis affecting Tunisia, and the latest updates from the Dutch national team camp. Listeners were invited to join the discussion on these topics.
