Yoann Gourcuff, victim of a toxic atmosphere among the French in 2010

Yoann Gourcuff, victim of a toxic atmosphere among the French in 2010

The year 2010 remains etched as the darkest in the history of the Blues, marked by the group‑stage elimination at the World Cup in South Africa and by the Knysna scandal, where the players refused to get off the bus to protest Nicolas Anelka’s dismissal. At the same time, Yoann Gourcuff was going through difficult trials.

The media had prematurely presented him as the successor to Zinedine Zidane, putting the Breton playmaker in the spotlight from the start of the tournament. This expectation created additional pressure on the young international.

Soon, he ran into a particularly hostile environment within the squad. He experienced a deep rift with some senior players, including the captain at the time, Patrice Evra, as confirmed by Pierre Ménès.

Accusations from Pierre Ménès

“Yoann Gourcuff, it’s the story of a guy who was psychologically beaten down by unhealthy players from the French national team,” said the former Canal+ consultant on his YouTube channel. He added that the Netflix documentary does not show this side and that Raymond Domenech is too easily blamed while the players are exonerated.

According to him, the players who wanted him dead were Nicolas Anelka, Sébastien Abidal, Patrice Evra and Florent Malouda.

Chronicle of a boycott

He also disputed the idea that Gourcuff was mentally fragile, recalling what he experienced in South Africa during the 2010 World Cup. He criticized the fact that the Blues put a lot of pressure on Franck Ribéry, even though there has never been a fight between them.

Florent Malouda is said to have gone to see Domenech before the first match against Uruguay, stating he wanted to defend for Zinedine Zidane but refused to play for Gourcuff. Domenech would then have decided not to play him.

Pierre Ménès recalls a meeting at the Training Centre where Gourcuff allegedly told Domenech that he could not play because of the teammates’ boycott. Domenech would have asked for a video proving otherwise, but the editor refused, claiming the players never gave him the ball.

He was described as a “new star”, too handsome and too well‑behaved, before being smashed by “thugs” who still thrive. Today, seeing Patrice Evra giving lessons to the whole world highlights the persistence of these tensions.
