Young River talent heads to Europe as Burgos banks on Argentine left‑foot

Leaving River Plate at a very young age, Santiago Lencina has sparked expectations across Europe, signing a loan with Spanish side Burgos that could reshape his career and ease the Argentine club’s wage bill.

From Cantilo to a loan in Spain

Amid the resolutions for players who were not a priority and who worked differently at the Cantilo training ground, Santiago Lencina managed to unlock his exit from River Plate under Eduardo "Chacho" Coudet. The move sent the young midfielder from the Argentine side to the Segunda División of España on a one‑year loan.

The agreement includes an option to purchase 50 % of his registration, with possibilities for extension, and a buy‑back clause that favours the club of Núñez. The loan runs for one season, giving Burgos a chance to assess his impact before committing fully.

Expectations in the Spanish club

In his first statements, the chaqueño explained his choice: "Fue el club que mostró más interés desde el primer día. Eso fue algo muy importante para dar este paso y lo que hizo, en gran parte, que tomara este camino." He added that the dream of any South American player is to come to Europe, calling the move a crucial step in his career.

During his time at River, Lencina completed his formation in the club’s lower divisions and made his professional debut on 2 August 2025, in a 3‑0 win over San Martín de Tucumán in the Copa Argentina round of 32. He accumulated 31 official matches and scored three goals, but never secured a permanent spot in Marcelo Gallardo’s starting eleven.

After Eduardo Coudet took over as head coach, Lencina’s role diminished, with his last appearance on 27 May in a 3‑0 Copa Sudamericana victory over Blooming. Excluded from the pre‑season in Alicante, he trained apart from the first‑team squad at Cantilo for more than a month while awaiting a decision on his future.

The Spanish side sees his offensive profile and individual imbalance as key assets for a demanding European campaign.

This loan allows River to lighten the payroll of players who have fallen out of favour, while Lencina seeks the playing time that eluded him locally. The contrast highlights a young Argentine left‑footed midfielder using a European opportunity to revive his trajectory, as his former club trims its squad.
