Athens: Grief envelops Panathinaikos after George Baldock's death
On October 10, 2024 the news of the disappearance of George Baldock, defender of Panathinaikos and the Greek national team, shook the footballing Europe: the former pillar of Sheffield United was found lifeless in the pool of his residence in Glyfada, south of Athens.
The circumstances of the tragedy
According to reconstructions, it was Baldock's wife, who remained in England with their son, who initiated the search. After hours of fruitless attempts to make contact, she asked the property owner to check the situation; it was he who discovered the body at the bottom of the pool and called for assistance.
Greek authorities later confirmed, through forensic medical examinations, that the cause of death was drowning, immediately ruling out any malicious or violent element.
Baldock's football career
George Baldock, born in Buckinghamshire, linked his name to Sheffield United for seven seasons, tallying 219 appearances and six goals, contributing to the double promotion from League One to the Premier League. Fans at Bramall Lane nicknamed him “Starman”, celebrating his energy and dedication.
In 2022 he chose to represent the Greek national team, thanks to his paternal grandmother’s origins, and has collected 12 caps with the Greek shirt. In the summer of 2024, after Sheffield United’s relegation, he signed a three‑year contract with Panathinaikos, thus beginning a new adventure in the Greek league.
The Greek club expressed deep condolences, immediately suspending institutional activities as a sign of respect.
Fate placed the tragedy only a few hours before the UEFA Nations League clash between England and Greece at Wembley. Baldock was due to play for Greece, but the team approached the match in mourning, securing a 2‑1 victory dedicated to the departed teammate.
