Club Brugge eyes Yann Sommer as safe successor to Mignolet

🇧🇪

Club Brugge, the Belgian champions, face a crucial summer decision after veteran goalkeeper Simon Mignolet retired at the end of last season, leaving the club in search of a new number one between the posts. Transfer specialist Sacha Tavolieri says the club has already identified a clear front‑runner: 37‑year‑old Swiss international Yann Sommer, whose contract with Inter expires this summer.

Sommer's career includes spells at FC Basel, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern München before joining Inter. His experience in top European leagues gives him a strong pedigree for the Belgian champions. However, Tavolieri notes that Sommer also has other offers on the table, meaning Club Brugge is not the only suitor.

Club Brugge is also in discussions with Matz Sels, a goalkeeper with years of experience abroad. Sels has represented the Rode Duivels, adding international exposure to his resume. The club sees him as a reliable alternative should Sommer's negotiations stall.

Former Club Brugge keeper Matthew Ryan, who guarded the net from 2013 to 2015, remains another candidate. Ryan became a fan favourite during his first spell and later featured for Genk, Brighton, Arsenal, FC Kopenhagen, AZ, AS Roma, Lens and Levante. His familiarity with the club and broad experience make him a compelling option.

According to Tavolieri, Club Brugge wants a ready‑made starter rather than a gamble under the posts. While Yann Sommer appears to be the leading candidate, the club deliberately keeps the door open for other seasoned goalkeepers. The final decision will shape the team's defensive stability for the upcoming season.
