Erling Haaland's late goal propels Norway towards Brazil clash

At Al Bayt Stadium, the atmosphere crackled as the clock ticked down, and Erling Haaland's decisive strike sealed Norway's 2-1 triumph over Ivory Coast, guaranteeing a spot in the World Cup round of 16. The late goal turned a tight contest into a historic qualification.

Ivory Coast enjoyed a slight edge in the first half, controlling possession but failing to create clear chances. Erling Haaland, the Manchester City striker, was barely involved, managing only a few headers that posed little threat.

Just before the break, Antonio Nusa gave Norway the lead by curling the ball into the top corner. His strike arrived after a period of dominance by the Africans, shifting momentum to the Scandinavians.

Soon after the restart, Haaland found a large opportunity to double Norway's lead, only to have his effort intercepted just before the goal line. The missed chance highlighted his limited impact up to that point.

In the second half, Ivory Coast reclaimed the initiative, with former Arsenal winger Nicolas Pépé seeing the equaliser on his shoes. Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland denied him, preserving Norway's advantage.

A quarter of an hour before full time, substitute Amad Diallo restored parity for Ivory Coast with a solo run culminating in a powerful finish to the far corner. His goal forced extra time and raised the stakes for the final minutes.

Five minutes from the final whistle, Haaland capitalised on a measured cross from Patrick Berg, tapping the ball in from close range. The strike marked his fifth goal of the tournament and secured Norway's passage to the round of 16.

In the upcoming round of 16, Norway will meet Brazil, who secured their own place by defeating Japan with an identical 2-1 score on Monday evening. Brazil also relied on a late goal to clinch that victory.
