Foul triggers Spanish murder squad – Jesús de Miguel shocks the pitch

On the pitch the players froze when the Spanish striker Jesús de Miguel collapsed after a hard foul and, despite resuscitation attempts, died in the hospital in the morning; his death has activated the Spanish homicide division of the National Police, while the Deutsche Presse‑Agentur reports that the case is already under judicial supervision.

Earlier, the state broadcaster RTVE, together with other media, had reported on the incident, quoting the Spanish authorities.

According to the news agency AP, an investigation is underway for possible negligent homicide.

De Miguel played as a striker for CD Tenerife before he died from the hard foul and the subsequent cardiac arrest.

In the collision with goalkeeper Jesús Owono of FC Andorra, he sustained obvious head injuries.

Rescue workers had to resuscitate the professional on the way to the hospital before he died in the morning.

The incident occurred in stoppage time, when de Miguel was fouled just behind the halfway line by the sprinting Andorra‑Keeper.

The referee immediately showed a red card for the overly harsh action.

The players of both teams appeared shaken by the sight of the injured player, and the match was abandoned at 2:2.

The death sparked horror beyond Spain's borders and elicited widespread sympathy in the sporting world.
