Italy dominates Turkey and lets Turkey's Nations League hopes fade

In the flickering light of the Bursa stadium, the whistles of the Turkish fans echoed through the night, while Italy already took the lead with three goals. Can Uzun confirmed that the Turkish national team had lost to Italy on Monday. The defeat came on the second matchday of the Nations League.

Early Italian goals dictate the course of the game

Alessandro Bastoni opened the scoring in the 9th minute, followed by Davide Frattesi in the 22nd and Michael Kayode in the 27th minute. These three goals gave Italy a clear 3-0 before halftime. The Turkish fans in Bursa left the field after the break amid loud whistling.

The halftime was marked by frustration; the Turkish side only briefly hoped for a turnaround. Barış Yılmaz brought Turkey to 1-3 in the 47th minute, but three minutes later Pio Esposito equalised for Italy and set the final score at 1-4.

After the equaliser, Turkey remained offensive but let several chances go unexploited. A second goal by Yılmaz was not recognised due to an offside position by Kerem Aktürkoğlu.

For Turkey, the result after the 0-1 defeat to France means the second loss in the second game. In League A, Group 1, Turkey now stands as the only team without points and must fight for every point in the upcoming away matches in Belgium and Turkey, otherwise relegation looms.

Italy, under the new, old national coach Roberto Mancini, found with the performance in Turkey an answer to the 0-2 loss to Belgium. The Azzurri currently sit as third in the group and will face France in Paris and again Turkey in Italy in the next fixtures.
