Martínez apologises to Manchester United after criticism – fine threatened

In Manchester United's training room, Argentine World Cup winner Lisandro Martínez sits after a “very positive conversation” with the club chiefs and speaks openly about the “frustration over the defeat” that had led him to make reckless remarks.

Apology after public criticism

Martínez, who has been playing for Manchester United since 2022, has apologized to the club for his critical remarks about the club management. He explained that in the moment of disappointment over the 0‑2 Champions League loss to Atlético Madrid he expressed his feelings in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“The frustration over the defeat led me to give expression to my feelings at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones – for that I want to apologise,” said the 28‑year‑old defender.

Tensions remain despite apology

English media report that despite the apology a fine for Martínez cannot be ruled out. “Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and I live football with great intensity,” he emphasized, adding that the club is strongest when everyone acts together.

He said he is aware that his words at that moment did not contribute to the shared goal and that every individual at United does everything to achieve the success the club and its fans deserve.

The sporting situation at Manchester United is tense: after six matchdays the “Red Devils” sit on just six points in 13th place in the Premier League. Out of nine league games the club has only won two, and in the last five matches not a single victory has been recorded.

In the league cup United were already eliminated after a 2‑3 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion. The combination of a weak league position and an early cup exit intensifies the pressure on players and the coaching staff.

The trigger for the controversy was the Champions League defeat on Tuesday, after which Martínez publicly criticised that manager Michael Carrick was equipped with an inadequate squad and that he expects more from the sporting director.

Now the focus must be on directing everyone's concentration towards the shared success, while the club leadership considers possible disciplinary measures.
