Martinez criticises United's leadership and apologises after public tirade

At Manchester United's training ground, Lisandro Martinez stood loudly in front of the club management on Tuesday and made his dissatisfaction with the club's current situation clear. Shortly thereafter he released a statement in which he apologized for his words and asked for understanding.

Sharpness of the Critique

Martinez sharply attacked Manchester United's club management and complained that coach Michael Carrick was equipped with an inadequate squad. When asked about additional investment, he replied: “One hundred percent. I expect more from our sporting director.”

Reaction of the Fans

The majority of United fans backed the statements of the Argentine world champion of 2022 and expressed solidarity with his criticism. At the same time it became clear that the remarks were not well received internally.

Apology

In a social‑media statement Martinez said: “The frustration over the defeat led me to express my feelings at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones – for that I would like to apologise.”

Background of the Crisis

While Manchester City faces a looming sanction over financial breaches that hangs over the club like a dark cloud, United is struggling on the pitch. In the Premier League the record champion (20 titles) has the worst start to a season in forty years (6 points from 6 games) and suffered its first defeat of the week in the Champions League.

Outlook

Martinez’s contract expires next summer, but United hold an option to extend it. Whether his apology is enough to avert a possible internal sanction remains unclear.
