Montella under pressure: Turkey's crisis in the Nations League
Six months ago Vincenzo Montella had brought Turkey back to the World Cup after twenty‑four years of absence, becoming the hero of an entire nation. Today, however, the coach finds himself at the centre of criticism after the new knockout loss to Belgium in the Nations League.
The third consecutive knockout loss in the Nations League follows the 2‑1 defeat to France, then four goals conceded to Italy and three to Belgium. Eight goals in 270 minutes have raised the alarm on the Turkish defence.
“I don’t want to pay too much attention to today’s criticism,” Montella said, reminding that being in League A is nevertheless a privilege for Turkey.
The absences of Calhanoglu, Yildiz and Kokcu have weighed heavily, while against Italy the suspended Arda Guler and Baris Yilmaz will also be missing.
Key absences and criticism
Monday’s clash at the Dall’Ara against Italy represents a crucial point: another defeat would make relegation almost certain and could mark Montella’s last act in Turkey, despite his contract running until 2028.
Interestingly, it will be Italy that decides the future of the Turkish coach, as the result of that match could determine whether Montella will continue at the helm of the national team.
