Nations League woes see Vincenzo Montella under Italiano scrutiny after Coppa flop

Vincenzo Montella, the Italian coach of Turkey, has been summoned to the Turkish football federation’s headquarters following a 1-3 defeat to Italy in Bologna, marking the fourth loss in four Nations League matches.

Criticism over familiar faces

The coach is accused of relying on the “soliti amici” – the usual friends – after the World Cup disappointment, a charge that has intensified media scrutiny.

Montella responded, “Non penso di essere il miglior allenatore del mondo. Sono fortunato in questo,” asserting humility while defending his position.

Defence and determination

He added, “Perché so che continuerò sempre a migliorare me stesso,” and expressed confidence in his squad, stating he has “fiducia al 100 percento in tutti i nostri calciatori.”

Despite receiving several offers, Montella said he is “molto felice di essere rimasto in Turchia,” underscoring his commitment to the national side.

Federation turmoil

The Turkish federation is currently grappling with a betting scandal that has triggered resignations among board members and an extraordinary general assembly.

These upheavals have delayed decisions on Montella’s future, with the federation’s capacity to replace the coach described as uncertain.

Under‑21 involvement

After the meeting, Montella travelled to Başakşehir to watch the Turkey Under‑21 side face Hungary, a move seen as a sign he remains engaged with the national programme.

His presence at the youth match may hint at strategic planning for the remaining Nations League fixtures in November.
