Premier League powerhouse wants to extend Martínez, Ajax option fades

Technical director Jordi Cruijff does not need to call Lisandro Martínez for now, reports Football Insider, because the chance is small that the Argentine international will return to Ajax in the short term. Martínez is in his final contract year at Manchester United, a Premier League‑powerhouse that is considering a renewal option.

According to the outlet, Manchester United has an option year in the contract and appears to intend to activate it this year. The central defender has himself indicated that he would like to remain active at Old Trafford.

Contract year and renewal option

If Martínez were to see out his current contract, he would complete a period of six seasons in Manchester. It is even not excluded that the defender could wear the United‑tenue for longer, as the club hierarchy is considering offering him a new, longer‑term contract.

Injury history and Ajax chance

Since his departure from Ajax, Martínez has missed more than a hundred matches due to injuries, both at club and international level. So far he has played 112 games for Manchester United, of which only 21 in the past year.

Nevertheless, Manchester United is considering keeping him permanently on board, making an Ajax‑return in the short term seem unlikely. His physical condition remains a point of discussion within the club hierarchy.

Jordi Cruijff managed to bring big names to Ajax last transfer summer, but Martínez currently poses an obstacle. As far as is known, there has not yet been any serious approach from Ajax.

If United decides to offer a multi‑year contract, Martínez will have the chance to continue his career at the Premier League‑powerhouse, while Ajax's interest remains in the background.
