Roma's Wesley out of Brazil due to quadriceps tear
Roma's right-back Wesley has withdrawn from the Brazil national team call-up due to a tear in his right quadriceps, announced by the Brazilian federation via Corriere dello Sport. The injury surfaced after he played all ninety minutes of the 2-2 draw against Inter on Saturday at the Stadio Olimpico.
Injury and impact on the national team
Wesley suffered the right quadriceps tear during the match against Inter. Roma's doctor confirmed that the injury will require a period of rest, ruling the player out of Brazil's upcoming friendly series. The Brazilian federation communicated the decision via Corriere dello Sport.
Vanderson called as replacement
In his place, the federation called up Vanderson, Monaco's right-back. So far he has played seven matches this season, five in Ligue 1 and two in the Conference League qualifying rounds. The national team return marks his first appearance since June 2025, when he featured in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay.
Wesley has always had a difficult relationship with the Brazil national team, after missing the World Cup due to injury. Only recently Carlo Ancelotti, his former coach at Roma, recalled him for the upcoming friendlies. The injury was reported on Saturday, confirming his inability to participate.
Meanwhile, Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante is in doubt for the Italy national team due to fatigue accumulated against Inter. Roberto Mancini had included him in the squad for the Nations League, but his physical condition remains uncertain. If he misses out, Italy will have to rethink its midfield.
Spor reported that Gian Piero Gasperini plans to rest Paulo Dybala, while Lorenzo Pellegrini is completing his recovery.
Wesley's absence reduces Brazil's options for attacking down the right flank, forcing the coach to reorganize the defensive unit. The replacement with Vanderson gives the manager the chance to field a player already experienced in European competitions, but the team will have to adapt quickly to the upcoming friendlies against Australia and India.
